The Swan house

ATLANTA, GEORGIA

the history of the swan house

Swan House, designed by architect Philip Trammell Shutze in 1928 for Edward and Emily Inman, is a historic residence listed on the National Register. Edward and his wife Emily, engaged Shutze to design the house in Buckhead, Atlanta. Swan House is considered Shutze's finest residential work, blending Italian and English classical styles.

The Inmans moved in before the Great Depression, preceding Edward's sudden death in 1931. During this time, discriminatory Jim Crow legislation created barriers to education, politics, and employment for many black southerners. However, the Swan House employed many African American employees including Elizabeth “Lizzie” McDuffie. Lizzie went on to work in the President Franklin D. Roosevelt White House, where she advocated for racial equality, was a political activist, and helped form a worker’s union for government employees.

Emily lived in Swan House until her death in 1965. In 1966, the Atlanta Historical Society acquired the property, turning it into a house museum in 1967. The residence showcases a range of original furnishings, representing different historical periods from the 18th to the 20th century.
